Still “Pale and Male”: The Persistence of Gender-Based Conceptions of Leadership in Education, and Investigating the Kinds of Messages You Are Getting About Leadership As A Young Female Leader with Kirsten Olson

Education is a field dominated by women–but led by men. In spite of significant gains over the last two decades, less than a quarter of the United State’s 14,000 school districts are headed by women. Females still fill only a third of upper-level principalships. Although the U.S. teaching force is 76% female, women and women of color are chronically underrepresented in top levels of educational leadership. In this interactive session, we investigate the kinds of messages audience members are getting about leadership in their graduate education or work settings. New gender and leadership development research focuses on “second generation bias,” the kinds of biases and structural barriers that are less visible to those experiencing it, and the need for specific leadership supports to address them. What kinds of messages are you getting about your leadership potential as a female? Who and what do you need to support yourself?
